Christopher Tufton to represent JLP in West Central St. Catherine

Dr. Christopher Tufton is set to contest the West Central St. Catherine seat on behalf of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the next general election.

In a statement on Thursday morning, the JLP said it was declaring the seat vacant and Dr. Tufton was the recommended candidate.

Deputy Leader James Robertson and Area Council Chairman Everard Warmington have been charged with responsibility for meeting with constituents to ensure a smooth transition.

Dr. Tufton had previously lost to Councillor Devon Wint, in a vote by delegates of the constituency to select a candidate for the seat. It emerged last week, however, that Wint had been withdrawn, under circumstances that are not yet quite clear, thereby making it possible for Tufton to get a second chance at contesting the election on the JLP ticket.

That decision has not gone down well with some of Councillor Wint's supporters, who on Wednesday protested against his removal and declared that they did not wish to have Dr. Tufton installed in his place.
