Mayor of Portmore Leon Thomas
Mayor of Portmore Leon Thomas has said he is not opposed to the designation of the municipality as Jamaica's fifteenth parish, however, he fears that after the process is complete, no development will be forthcoming.
Mr. Thomas argued that Portmore has already been in a similar situation after it was declared a city but did not get "what was supposed to come with it".
"I know that the Portmore City Municipality got the name before and what was supposed to come with it we did not get it. "So here comes again that we are getting a name and we are not going to get any improvement in our services in Portmore. There's nothing wrong with them giving Portmore parish [status], you know, but before parish we need to have improvements. Improvement needs to be done on our infrastructure," he asserted.
The mayor agreed that there is no requirement for certain amenities to be in place for an area to be declared a parish, but said the leadership of the municipality wants to see tangible results.
He said residents also need to hear in full, the government's plans for Portmore.
"I would just want to say to the government that yes, you want to fulfil your political promise, but there are thousands of people that live in Portmore [who] would want to be a part of what you are planning. So, I am asking them to have a fulsome discussion with the residents of Portmore, not political people," he declared.
It is projected that the process leading to Portmore being declared a parish could be completed before the next local government elections.
