The Digicel Group is set to expand its position as the Caribbean’s largest phone company following news that it is eyeing a major telecommunications company in the Dominican Republic. According to a Bloomberg report, the Jamaica-based Digicel is one of five bidders interested in Orange Dominicana, which is expected to be sold by the end of the year.
The acquisition would give Digicel control of the Caribbean nation’s second-biggest mobile-phone company, with 38 per cent of the market, trailing America Movil.
Digicel is already the largest carrier in neighbouring Haiti, one of its 31 markets in the Caribbean, Central and South America as well as the South Pacific.
