A new study shows that global tourism will take at least three to five years to recover from Covid-19 but players are finding innovative ways to survive the impact of coronavirus.
According to a Euromonitor International report - if the pandemic is contained within a year and demand begins to rebound in 2021, it expects airlines to take a minimum of four years to recover, while lodging and intermediaries will take longer.
Euromonitor's Voice of Industry Survey says that travel is lagging behind other sectors such as consumer goods, retail and packaging when it comes to recovery.
Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has expressed cautious optimism as data reveal that Jamaica's tourism industry is slowly rebuilding.
The industry was devastated by the covid-19 pandemic, which grounded airlines, halted cruise shipping and resulted in many hotels and attractions closing.
The tourism ministry is now projecting a 40 per cent increase in arrivals over the winter season when compared to the preceding periods of massive downturn.
Bartlett says preliminary figures from the Jamaica Tourist Board indicate that since reopening on June 15, the country has recorded a little over 211 thousand passengers.
He says June to September earnings amounted to US$231.9 million.
