German Ship Repair Jamaica (GSRJ) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the HEART/NSTA Trust towards training more people in the shipping industry.

Managing Director at HEART Dr. Taneisha Ingleton says the partnership will see HEART trainees benefitting from apprenticeship at the GSRJ.

"It will expose youth to the work environment while developing the necessary employability skills by facilitating trainees' integration into the work spaces to undertake real work activities and enhance their learning experiences. So you're not just learning a skill, you're not just doing what you need to do to repair ships, you are becoming employable because on the job you are being taught how to be professional, how to show up for work, how to manage up, how to engage in difficult conversations and these things are important for a wholesome employee," she declared.

Dr. Ingleton also said courses and training modules will be developed, along with enrichment for staff at the shipyard and instructors.

Meanwhile, CEO at German Ship Repair Jamaica, Colonel Martin Rickman, said the MOU will help the organisation fill a number of the required talent gaps with local personnel.

"These guys become marketable on the international scene which is an excellent career path for many young persons who are coming through. So we're looking for the best of the best of these guys who want to come to the shipyard."

Colonel Rickman said the deal will see the HEART trainees develop through a robust internship programme, after which they will receive internationally recognised certification.
