US Department of Agriculture funding five-year spices project in Jamaica

The US Department of Agriculture is currently funding a five-year spices project dubbed Food for Progress Jamaica Spices Project.

The initiative is seeking to improve and expand the production and sale of ginger, turmeric and pimento to generate US$20.75 million in revenues with $14.5 million coming from exports.

Some 7,500 farmers will be included in the project, including women and youth. The objective is to increase yields by 50% through the use of better planting materials.

The Spice Sector Value Chain Analysis Study conducted by Technical Services and the Competitiveness Company indicates that the farmers who plant spices such as ginger, turmeric and pimento are getting only 5% of the revenues from the products as the bulk of the money goes to the traders.
