The government has allocated $100 million to support Irish potato farmers under the newly launched national irish potato programme.
The programme was launched in St. Ann on Wednesday.
Agriculture Minister Floyd Green highlighted the programme's goal of meeting the nation's annual demand for Irish potatoes, which currently stands at 21,000 tons.
Minister Green said with consumption patterns on the rise, the initiative aims to ensure a stable and sufficient supply by targeting 1,500 hectares for cultivation.
"We want at least 4,000 farmers to join with us in our programme this year. And the ministry has earmarked $100 million to provide support in the form of seeds, chemicals, fertiliser, to help you the farmers do what you love, farm Irish potato, and reach to our numbers," he declared.
