Barbados says US travel advisory unwarranted

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Barbados has criticised the United States's decision to issue an advisory warning Americans not to travel to the island in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement on Thursday, the foreign ministry said the advisory suggested that the virus is very prevalent in Barbados.

The statement says Barbados does not accept that its national conditions merit the assignment of a Level-4 advisory.

The advisory is customarily reserved for states in the midst of destabilizing conflict or in which American travellers have been targeted for harm.

Barbados now joins 129 other nations, about 80 per cent of the world, to receive the new label from the US State Department.
