Executive Director of the Integrity Commission Greg Christie has said he is not surprised by today's incident in which a director of the Commission was shot.

Ryan Evans, Director of Corruption Prevention at the Integrity Commission, has been hospitalised after he was shot and wounded in the car park at the Commission's offices in New Kingston.

He was shot in the arm and a briefcase in his possession was stolen by his attackers.

When TVJ reporters Kirk Wright and Jamaila Maitland asked Mr. Christie for his reaction to the shooting on Thursday afternoon, he retorted: "You should ask the government that.... Ask them what that means."

Mr. Christie argued that officials of the public body have been the subject of increasing threats due to the constant criticism of the Commission by government ministers.

He contended that such an incident "would be inevitable" based on what he claimed was the hostile work environment the agency's staff had endure in recent months.

Mr. Christie said he met with the staff Thursday afternoon to discuss the incident and plans to increase security around them.

He said private security is being provided to officials of the agency, starting immediately.

The police have sought to quell rising speculation that Thursday morning's shooting of the Integrity Commission director was part of a pre-mediated attack on officials of the agency.

They say preliminary information gathered so far suggests the motive was robbery
