The Police High Command is moving swiftly to quell rising speculation that Thursday morning's shooting of a Director of the Integrity Commission was part of a pre-mediated attack on officials of the agency.
Ryan Evans, the Director of Corruption Prevention, was attacked and shot in the car park of the agency in New Kingston when he arrived for work about 11 o'clock.
His attackers made off with a briefcase that had been in his possession.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey, head of crime, told Radio Jamaica News that the preliminary information gathered by detectives so far suggests that Mr. Evans was the victim of armed robbers.
"Based on our preliminary investigation, Mr. Evans went to a financial institution and withdrew a huge sum of money, and drove to his office, exited his motor car from one of the car parks with his attache case, when two men rode up on a motorbike, and one, the pillion came off the bike, pulled a firearm, and demanded the attache case from Mr. Evans.
"A struggle ensued, and Mr. Evans was shot in his arm, and the attache case with the money was taken by the robber. So our preliminary investigation so far is suggesting robbery as the motive," DCP Bailey told reporters.
The senior policeman added that there is no information provided to the police to suggest that Mr. Evans was the victim of a targeted attack.
But he urged anyone with information on the shooting or who may believe they have another reason for the robbery to contact the Police High Command or the nearest police station.
