Residents of Fort Charles in south west St. Elizabeth want their political representatives to resolve a dust nuisance caused by marl used to fill potholes on the main road in the community.

The residents staged a protest Monday morning showing Radio Jamaica's correspondent dust covered vegetation, houses and furniture.

Oswald Lindo said trucks which transport sand through the area are adding to the problem, causing potholes, awakening more dust and affecting persons with asthma.

Another resident, Martel Bryan, is concerned that the sand mining is adding to their troubles.

He claimed the activity has removed the buffer for Fort Charles and surrounding seaside communities from huge waves.

"It is dangerously mined to a depth of over 60 ft below sea level. Should there be tsunami or severe hurricane, the entire community would be washed away," he warned.
