Despite assurances from Agriculture Minister Floyd Green, table eggs were in short supply leading up to Christmas Day this year.
But president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) President Owen Dobson says production levels should return to normal by February.
Mr. Dobson says farmers have been struggling to meet the usual high demand for the protein during this period.
"There is an egg shortage and you know that the demand for eggs at this time of the year is much higher than the other time because, as you know, a lot of people do a lot of baking and things like that," he pointed out.
Mr. Dobson said farmers are still trying to recuperate after Hurricane Beryl destroyed numerous farm houses as well as birds.
While many have rebuilt their coobs and received new birds, he noted that birds that were saved during Beryl underwent stress and were not producing as they ought to.
The JAS president said with the Agriculture Ministry not issuing any import licence for eggs, he is optimistic that the industry will rebound soon, "hopefully in the new year".
Speaking with Radio Jamaica News in St. Ann recently, Minister Green said the ministry was working, especially with bakeries, to ensure they had adequate supply of liquid eggs which would take some of the pressure off supermarkets in relation to the table eggs.
