The management of Mega Mart wholesale club is seeking to
clear the air regarding allegations that the company placed a device at its
premises to interrupt the recording of electricity.
In a released sent to the RJR News Centre Sunday morning, the company says it is seeking to end growing speculation and misunderstanding concerning developments between itself and the Jamaica Public Service (JPS).
According to the release on December 4 of this year, electricity supply to the Kingston and Portmore branches of Mega Mart was disconnected.
This, the company said, was done after the JPS discovered a device on its system that interrupted the recording of the consumption of electricity.
Mega Mart's management says because this is considered a criminal matter, the JPS informed the company that a full report was made to the police and the devices were removed and turned over to the police.
The release further states that the management of Mega Mart had discussions with JPS and made it clear that the device found on its premises was unauthorized.
According to the management, an investigation was launched into the matter.
The management says it was then revealed that an employee who was responsible for the maintenance of both properties, in a bid to save energy, collaborated with engineers last year and installed the device.
Mega Mart says that the employee was suspended pending a more detailed investigation.
It says investigations are continuing to ascertain whether the engineer worked in collusion with JPS technicians.
The company says it regrets that this occurred after thorough efforts by itself and JPS to ensure quality and reliable power to all Mega Mart Stores.
These efforts the management says includes contact and involvement with the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) along with independent overseas experts who have assessed a problem of high fluctuation in the supply of electricity to both its Kingston and Portmore stores.
