Health Minister Ruddy Spencer said money has been
identified in the Consolidated Fund to expand the Mandeville Regional
Public Hospital.
Mr. Spencer said the money will be available in April to start work on the block that has been earmarked for that purpose.
The Minister's visit to the hospital came after doctors and nurses assigned to the department walked off the job this morning, citing frustration at the lack of space to place patients.
Only one doctor and the nurse in charge of the ward were left to man the department.
Mr. Spencer would not give a time line for the work to begin.
However he insisted that the money is in hand and will be available in the new budget year.
Mr. Spencer said patients are bypassing hospitals in Clarendon, St.
Elizabeth and Trelawny to go to Mandeville and he is appealing to them to go to the hospitals in their communities.
