The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) is denying that oil has been found in Jamaica.
A newspaper columnist on Sunday claimed that an estimated 229 million barrels of recoverable offshore oil and gas have been discovered.
However, in a news release Monday afternoon, the PCJ said while indicators are relatively positive, Jamaica is not yet at a point where it can declare an oil find.
The PCJ said work is progressing steadily under a 2014 Production Sharing Agreement with Tullow Oil PLC.
In April 2018, Jamaica's Oil and Gas Exploration Programme marked a major milestone when Tullow carried out the first ever 3D Seismic Survey in Jamaica's off-shore areas.
The PCJ said, while an initial interpretation of data revealed positive indicators of the potential presence of fluids, at this point there is no scientific confirmation of the actual presence of oil or gas offshore Jamaica.
Tullow and the PCJ are now undertaking a detailed analysis of the data which should be completed by the end of September.
The final results of the survey will influence whether Tullow drills a well to try to confirm possible oil deposits, with a final determination expected by 2020.
