Police plan increased activities to help reduce motorcycle crashes

Assistant Commissioner Dr. Gary McKenzie, head of the JCF's Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch

With motorcyclists accounting for 32 per cent of road fatalities, the police will be ramping up enforcement activities and public education to target this vulnerable category of road users.

That's according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Gary McKenzie, head of the Public Safety & Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB).

Some 363 people died in road crashes up to December 29.

ACP McKenzie said the figure includes 115 motorcyclists, which is "way more than the other category which is about 80...pedestrians".

"And so that is our strategy in terms of looking at our categories. Also, we aim to be strategic in terms of our deployments. There are certain areas that we term 'crash hotspots', and we have been very successful in terms of reducing the number of crashes in those areas by some 50 this year when we compare it to 2023," he noted.

A total 425 road fatalities were recorded last year.
