Public Health Specialist Dr Alverston Bailey is urging the Ministry of Health & Wellness to determine whether the Sars-cov-2 omicron JN 1 virus is present in the Jamaican population.

Dr Bailey says, if this strain of the virus is present, the ministry should obtain up to date vaccines to combat the viral disease.

He says this strain of the virus is prevalent in the United States and is likely to be present in Jamaica.

Dr Bailey says the virus continues to circulate and evolve on a weekly basis.

The JN.1 variant is estimated to be the cause of more than 60% of current COVID-19 cases in the U.S.
