Vandalism of JUTC buses declines

JUTC Security Manager Radcliffe Lewis

There has been a decline in the incidence of vandalism which have plagued the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) and caused extensive damage to buses.

JUTC Security Manager Radcliffe Lewis said the incidence of stoning have declined over the past four months.

But he said only a few arrests have been made in connection with the vandalism due to the time that they occur.

"Most of our stoning incidents happen in the wee hours of the morning...when it is actually dark and the driver cannot see. So because of the cover of darkness, the perpetrators cannot be identified," he lamented.

Mr. Lewis said over the last five years, buses have been stoned in the Three Miles, Harbour View, Riverton City areas, and along Washington Boulevard in the vicinity of Maverley.

He said the pattern highlights the need for heightened security and vigilance to protect the nation's public transportation fleet.

Meanwhile, the JUTC's head of security said the theft of fuel has ceased and credited it to the leadership of the company's Managing Director Owen Ellington.
