Swimmer Alia Atkinson finished fourth in the Olympic women's 100 metre breaststroke final in London Monday afternoon, thereby equalling the best ever finish
in games history by a Jamaican.
The 23-year old's time of a minute 06.93 seconds, was 5-tenths of a second off the third place finisher in the race won by Lithuanian teenager Ruta Meilutyte in a time of 1:05:47.
Atkinson finished ahead of the 2008 champion Leisel Jones of Australia.
Janelle Atkinson had also finished fourth place in the 400-metre freestyle at the 2000 sydney games.
Andrew Phillips, the only other jamaican to reach an olympic swimming 'a' final had ended 6th.
Atkinson has two more races in which to compete, the 200 metre breaststroke to start on Wednesday
and the 50 metre freestyle on Friday.
