7-foot centre Kofi Cockburn scored the winning basket with less than one second to go, as Jamaica created an upset in the first leg of their Group "B" FIBA 2027 World Cup Americas basketball qualifier, clipping hosts Puerto Rico 92 - 90 in San Juan on Friday night.
The teams ended the first quarter tied at 26-all, while the half time break saw Puerto Rico out front 57-52. Jamaica clawed their way back to lead 76-68 at the end of the third quarter.
Cockburn sent the Jamaican delegation into wild celebrations when he converted the winning shot with just point-three seconds to go in the contest.
Cockburn led the way for the Jamaicans with 26 points and 15 rebounds, while Tyran De-Lattibeaudiere and Drew Thelwell weighed in with 15 and 12 points respectively.
Puerto Rico will also host the second leg next Monday. The group also has Canada and the Bahamas with the top three teams advancing to the second round of qualifying.
