Historic first "Champs" title for Hydel; KC gain 34th hold on Mortimer Geddes Trophy

Hydel High School created history on Saturday night by lifting their first ever girls’ title at the ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Championships which ended at the National Stadium.

Hydel tallied 279 points to squeeze out a nail-biting and dramatic 2-point victory over dethroned champions Edwin Allen High who were seeking their 9th consecutive and 10th title overall. Holmwood Technical on 202, St Jago 178 and St Catherine High 116, completed the top five.

On the boys’ side, Kingston College amassed 366 points to retain their title and record their 34th hold on the Mortimer Geddes Trophy.

The top five was completed by Jamaica College on 299, Calabar 207, St Jago 118.5 and St Elizabeth Technical 116.

Among the highlights on the final day of competition was 100m champion and national junior record holder Alana Reid clocking 23.08 seconds to win the Class 1 girls 200m and complete the sprint double, Camperdown’s Brittannia Johnson throwing 15.33 metres to set a new girls’ Class 1 shot put record, erasing the old mark of 14.93 metres and KC’s captain Bouwahjgie Nkrumie producing a blistering anchor leg to lead his team to victory in the Class 1 boys 4x100m relay, clocking 40.01 seconds.

Edwin Allen’s Monique Stewart (Class Two 800/1500m); Kayla Johnson of Immaculate Conception (Class Four 100/200m); Tahj-Marques White of KC (Class Two 200/400m); Malique Smithband of Jamaica College (Class One 200/400m) and Calabar’s Shanique Gordon (Class Two 100m/110m hurdles) were all double winners on the final day.
