Jamaica, anchored by 2011 Daegu World 100 metre champion Yohan "The Beast" Blake, won the men's 4 x 200 metre final in a world record 1 min 18.63 secs at the Thomas Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas Saturday night, on day-1 of the inaugural IAAF World Relays.
The Jamaican team comprised Nickle Ashmeade, Jeremain Brown, Warren Weir and Blake. After Weir ran the third leg and handed over to Blake, the former world 100 metre champion appeared to be taking it easy, but exploded on the curve and stormed home in record time. St. Kitts/Nevis finished second in 1 min 20.66 seconds.
In the other major final run Saturday night, Jamaica finished second in a season's best 42.28 in the women's sprint relay final. The team of Carrie Russell (brilliant lead-off leg), Kerron Stewart, Schillonie Calvert and anchor Samantha Henry-Robinson endured two faulty baton changes which affected their effort. The USA won in a Championship Record of 41.88 secs, while Trinidad & Tobago finished third in 42.66 secs.
Jamaica qualified for the men's and women's 4 x 400 metre finals, while Kenya's women shattered the world record in the 4 x 1500 metres, clocking 16 mins 33.58 secs. The USA finished second in 16 mins 55.33 secs.
Sunday is the second and final day of the inaugural IAAF World Relays, where more than 40 countries and over 600 athletes are competing.
