New toll rates take effect; Portmore citizens group calls for three-day boycott

The Cumberland Tri-Sector Citizens Association in Portmore is calling for a three-day boycott of the Portmore toll road, starting Monday.

The toll increase for Highway 2000 East West took effect Saturday morning for the toll plazas at Portmore, Spanish Town, Vineyards and May Pen.

Portmore residents and truckers are among those who have expressed anger at the toll changes.

Dalton Scott, President of the Cumberland Tri-Sector Citizens Association, told Radio Jamaica News that the group has not given up its bid to have the new rates reduced.

Mr Scott disclosed that the group had intended to stage a protest on Saturday, but that did not materialise.

President of  the Jamaica Confederation of  Trade Unions Helene Davis Whyte has lamented that the higher cost to access the highway will be a major burden on the workforce especially a significant number of  government-paid employees.

The Toll Authority of  Jamaica has maintained that the operators of  Highway 2000 were not in a position to delay the toll increase.
