Digicel says the Guyanese government has given the assurance that the country’s telecommunications sector will soon be liberalized, paving the way for lower rates.
A Director of Digicel, Patrick James Mara, led a delegation of top officials of the company to a meeting with President Donald Ramotar and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.
Mr. Hinds yesterday deferred debate on the Telecommunications Amendment Bill in the National Assembly, saying the government has been holding talks with Digicel and the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company GT&T.
Digicel is said to becoming impatient for liberalisation of the international telecommunications market, and the approval needed to offer competitive international rates.
Currently, Digicel can offer inbound and outbound international calls only through GT&T because of the latter’s decades-old monopoly on international voice and data.
