The US Centres for Disease Control (CDC) has extended the level four status for Jamaica and is urging Americans to avoid travelling to the island.

Level four means that travellers to Jamaica have a very high possibility of  contracting COVID-19.

In an updated advisory on April 2, the CDC said because of the current situation in Jamaica, even fully vaccinated persons may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.

It is urging persons who must travel to Jamaica to first get fully vaccinated and observe COVID-19 prevention measures.

In a response Monday night, Delano Seivright, Senior Strategist in Jamaica’s Ministry of Tourism, said the CDC's alert has not discouraged persons from travelling to Jamaica, noting "that's the same alignment that pretty much every other country in the world has been given, including Antigua, Barbados, Canada, Costa Rica, St. Lucia, Turks & Caicos Islands, France, Germany..."

The country’s COVID-19 tally surpassed 41,000 on Sunday.

There have been 618 deaths from the virus since the start of the pandemic.

Nevertheless, Seivright told Radio Jamaica News that "an increasing number of Americans are making plans to travel to the island, and have "already made bookings to visit Jamaica," and will continue to do so.
