With discussions continuing between Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and the Jamaican Government about the repatriation of more than 1,000 Jamaicans aboard the Adventure of the Seas, the ship's captain has decided to change course and await instructions.

The ship is now drifting in Haitian waters.

Reports were that the ship would have stayed off the coast of Falmouth until Saturday when it was expected that the Jamaicans would have been allowed to disembark.

However, the Government of Jamaica said no permission was granted for the ship to enter Jamaican waters.

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang told Radio Jamaica News on Sunday night that the government is examining its options, as quarantine facilities are full.

He said an announcement could be made on Monday during the government's COVID-19 press conference.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said that, by later this week, some quarantine facilities will be taken out of operation allowing for the release of resources to assist in managing the vessel and providing a safe and convenient re-entry for the Jamaicans onboard the cruise ship.

In a statement Sunday night, Mr. Holness said the government was continuing its discussions with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's Adventure of the Seas.

Mr. Holness said it was always the intention of the Jamaican Government to accept the ship, but this can only be done when resources are available.

The Prime Minister added that, if it was the intention of the ship to sail into Jamaican waters without formal approval or even the courtesy of notice, while discussions are ongoing, it would represent a serious departure from good maritime practices.

Outline plan

Meanwhile, attorney Jennifer Housen, who is representing 55 Jamaicans on-board the Adventure of the Seas wants the government to clearly outline the plan to repatriate her clients.

Miss Housen said the government had nearly a month to make preparations for their return.

She told Radio Jamaica News that the Jamaicans on the ship are distressed.

Ms Housen also questioned the government's claim that it was not aware that the ship was on its way to Jamaica.
