Haiti: Prime Minister unable to return from foreign trip as gangs take control

By Prince Moore

There appears to be a coup in Haiti with a coalition of wanted criminal gangs claiming power in the CARICOM country, blocking Prime Minister Dr Ariel Henry from returning home after his visit to Kenya.

The latest news on his whereabouts is that he landed in Puerto Rico after apparently being unable to return to his country.

According to media reports, he arrived in the capital San Juan on Tuesday after flying from the US state of New Jersey.

The Haitian Prime Minister went to Kenya to sign an agreement allowing for a United Nations Security Council sanctioned international force to restore peace and security in the violence torn country.

In addition, the gangs are threatening to gun down any aircraft flying him back to Haiti where a three-member presidential council would be installed as an acting executive branch.

Outspoken and leftist political leader, Jean-Charles Moise, said the new government would soon be installed with a judge as chairman assisted by former rebel leader and former police commissioner Guy Philippe, and Francoise Saint-Vil Villier, from the religious sector, a close ally to Mr Moise.

Mr Moise told journalists on Tuesday that Prime Minister Henry and all the other members of the government must resign or they will face the consequences.

Mr Moise said many ministers and other government officials have gone into hiding.

He promised that members of government who cooperate would have nothing to fear, but warned those who choose to remain faithful to Dr Henry would have to face the population's anger and would be sought after and chased.

Mr Moise has also warned foreign diplomats not to interfere with Haiti's internal affairs, under the penalty of being kicked out of the country.

He told reporters that any good help from cooperating countries will be welcome, but everything should be done according to terms that take into account Haiti's own interests and dignity.

Members of the group on Tuesday appeared determined to install a new regime to lead the country, unless there is a firm and resolute decision by the United States or other big powers – such as Canada, France or Europe – to compel actors to do otherwise.
