JATOO President Louis Barton and Radcliffe Lewis, former head of the Police Traffic Division
The Jamaica Association of Taxi Owners and Operators (JATOO) is defending the motorists captured in photographs driving through gaps in the median created to allow pedestrians to cross the newly constructed Constant Spring Road.
The police have apprehended one of the motorists.
Speaking Thursday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, JATOO President Louis Barton said it is not illegal to make turns at the location as there are no traffic signs erected.
"The construction that is going on on Constant Spring Road is not complete.... There are no markings for one, except for a few places that they try to put in since September 2nd. And so, it is a 'anything goes' on Constant Spring Road now," he asserted.
Mr. Barton said he has also made turns at the location as "there is nothing to say you shouldn't turn there" and "there is no sign put up anywhere."
However, Radcliffe Lewis, former head of the Police Traffic Division, described Mr. Barton's comment as nonsensical.
He argued that Constant Spring Road is a major roadway and common sense should have told Mr. Barton and other motorists that U-turns would not be permitted at that particular point.
He accused Mr. Barton of "defending the indefensible".
