Man killed in shoot-out was wanted – police

The police say the man who was killed in a shoot-out between gunmen and a joint security team in Portland Cottage, Clarendon is Orane Allwood of Darliston in Westmoreland.

They say Mr. Allwood was wanted in connection for two other crimes, the fatal shooting of a Haitian at Enfield in Darliston and a major drug bust in Fort Charles Beach in Clarendon last September.

The police say Mr. Allwood fled from a car which was packed with over 600 pounds of compressed ganja.

According to Jubert Llewellyn, Spokesman for Operation Kingfish, Mr. Allwood was shot and killed when he and other men traveling in two cars engaged a security team in a shoot-out.

He says the drama began about 8pm when the police/military team went into Portland Cottage in search of drug dealers, who eluded them.

The drivers of two motor vehicles travelling on the Portland Cottage main road were signalled to stop however, they sped away and escaped into the community.

The joint security team later caught up with the men.

"Being fully aware of the locale, the lawmen lay in wait and about 3 o'clock this morning when the drivers tried to leave the area, they were intercepted by the operatives and when the lawmen attempted to close in on the cars, the men opened fire at the team. The fire was returned and one of the drivers of one of the cars was shot while the passenger escaped," said Sergeant Llewellyn.

The injured driver was pronounced dead at hospital.

Sergeant Llewellyn says as investigations intensify, the police are now searching for the other gunman who escaped.

He says more than 900 pounds of compressed ganja and a firearm were seized.
