Maximum age limit for imported vehicles raised

The maximum age at which several types of motor vehicles can be imported into the island is being raised.
 
The Trade Board has published a notice on its website announcing the new vehicle import ages.
 
It said the date the new limits will come into effect will be announced soon.
 
Under the new regime, the importation age for sedans and station wagons is to be moved from five to six years.
 
The upper limits for light commercial vehicles are being moved from six years to 10 years.
 
The age limits for trucks and all buses, except those with a seating capacity of 15 to 20 persons, are also being increased by between three and five years.
 
The limit for motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles is being increased from five years to 10 years.
 
Lynvale Hamilton, President of the Jamaica Used Car Dealer's Association, said the new motor vehicle import ages will benefit consumers significantly, especially the "average Jamaican" and persons in the taxi service. 
 
He said sales will also be boosted by the changes. 
 
Additionally, he suggested it will provide opportunities for persons in the agricultural sector and those engaged in commercial activities.
