More calls for Joseph Hibbert to step aside

Calls for State Minister of Transport Joseph Hibbert to step aside during investigations into contracts involving UK bridge-building company Mabey and Johnson, have found another supporter.

Martin Henry, academic manager at the University of Technology and newspaper columnist said it makes sense that Mr. Hibbert should step aside and allow the investigations by local police and UK investigators to proceed unfettered.

Last week the Opposition People's National Party renewed its call for Prime Minister Bruce Golding to relieve Mr. Hibbert of his ministerial responsibilities.

The Opposition's call came following the start of a formal investigation by the Contractor General into allegations of corruption and irregularity in the awarding of contracts to the UK firm.

Meanwhile, Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry has reiterated that he will not interfere with the investigation involving his Junior Minister.

Responding to calls for Mr. Hibbert to step down in the wake of the ongoing investigations under the Mabey and Johnson Bridge Project, Mr. Henry said he only asks that the records surrounding the contracts are kept in place.

He adds that he will cooperate will all aspects of the investigation.
