A member of the medical fraternity is in support of the government's decision not to implement lockdowns despite a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Sunday reiterated that lockdowns will not be featured in the future to curb the spread of the virus.
Dr. Alfred Dawes, Medical Director of Windsor Wellness Centre in St. Andrew, agrees that lockdowns will negatively impact the economy.
He says the country could reach herd immunity through the Omicron variant, which is presumed to present milder symptoms than previous strains of COVID-19.
"The idea that we don't lockdown, I support it, because if you're going to allow any strain to run through Jamaica with this low vaccine take-up, then this ought to be the one. And if we can identify and protect the vulnerable, we can decrease the death rates and at the same time get as close as we can to herd immunity," he suggested.
Dr. Dawes was speaking on Monday morning on TVJ's Smile Jamaica programme.
