Two Lucea constables charged with kidnapping

Two constables attached to the Lucea Police in Hanover have been charged with kidnapping and robbery with aggravation.

Jafari Patterson and Leroy Frater were charged on Monday and taken to the Lucea Resident Magistrate's Court where they were each granted $500,000 bail.

It is alleged that on the afternoon of Friday April 4 the constables went to a house in Green Island where they told the occupant that he was wanted for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

While they were transporting the man to the station, the policemen demanded $200,000 to compromise the case.

The man took them back to his house and paid the constables $50,000.

Later in the day the man went to the Lucea Police Station to make a report.

While at the station, he saw Constable Frater.

The policeman was immediately taken into custody.

Constable Pearson turned himself in on April 6.

A file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions who ruled that they should be charged.

The two policemen are to return to court on June 6.

Their arrests further increased the number of police personnel held on corruption charges since the start of the year.

Recent figures released by the Anti-Corruption Branch show that more than 20 have been held.
