Certification for resurfaced National Stadium track likely to be downgraded

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Kayon Raynor

There is the clearest indication yet that the newly-relaid track at the National Stadium will only be re-certified at Level 2, moving down one level from the previous track’s certification on the World Athletics System.

Grand Slam Track's Venue Director, Don Lockerbie also confirmed that his organization suggested that the track be re-laid after having an independent assessment done on the 4  year old track previously laid by BSW Regupol in 2021.

Sports Minister Olivia Grange had indicated that the cost to do the track was US $350,000, but Lockerbie revealed that Grand Slam Track also paid more than that amount towards the work.

According to Radio Jamaica Sports sources, who requested anonimity, the cost to relay the track is well over US $800,000.

In the meantime, Lockerbie and IPL general manager Major Desmon Brown confirmed that Boys and Girls Athletics Championships will be the first meet on the track, not the Velocity Fest meet on March 22, as announced by Bruce James on Monday.
