Sunshine Girls to miss new netball tournament

Jamaica will be watching from the sidelines as its biggest rivals in netball battle each other in the inaugural staging of an annual series starting late next year in Australia and New Zealand.

The upcoming tournament will feature Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa, the world's number one, two, three and five teams.

International Netball Federation (INF) President, Jamaican Molly Rhone, who was asked about Jamaica’s absence from this event, said the organizers wanted a commitment for four years from each country regarding hosting of the event and also finding a television partner.

Rhone was uncertain Jamaica would have been in a position to provide such long term commitment.

It's not sure when discussions among the nations began, but further talks took place at the World Championship in Sydney, Australia this year, and a month ago the plan was brought to the INF.

For those without the individual resources, Rhone suggests a collaboration, which could be regional.

Jamaica could be invited, but that's not likely until after the second year of the competition, after which a review will be conducted and other countries may get an opportunity to join.
