WI must put Pakistan aside to reach World Cup semis

The unpredictable Pakistan is the obstacle between the West Indies and their first berth in a ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final since 1996.

Pakistan will start as favourites after topping Group A in the 2011 World Cup being staged on the Asian subcontinent with 10 points while the West Indies remain underdogs after finishing fourth in Group B.

However, the regional side should be boosted with the return of the explosive batsman Chris Gayle, who has recovered from an abdominal strain that forced him out of the final group match against India in Chennai on Sunday.

Kemar Roach, who is healthy after a mild infection and the experienced Shivnarine Chanderpaul are also set to return for the crucial quarter-final clash in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Wednesday, March 23.

Indications are that Andre Russell, Devendra Bishoo and wicket-keeper Devon Thomas could find themselves benched.

Pakistan, who ended Australia's 34-game unbeaten run in World Cup competitions on Saturday, are likely to name an unchanged side.

Wednesday's match will be the first time that Pakistan and the West Indies are meeting in a World Cup quarter-final, though they have met twice in the semis.

Both matches were at the oval in England in 1979 and 1983, with the West Indies winning both matches.

Match time is 3:30 a.m. Jamaica time and live broadcast can be seen on Television Jamaica (TVJ) ands TVJ Sport Network (TVJSN).

The West Indies last reached the semi-final of a World Cup 15 years ago, by beating South Africa on the Asian subcontinent.
