Windies team given all-clear to travel after breach of COVID protocols in New Zealand

After losing four days of training due to breaches of their quarantine protocols, the West Indies team has been given the all clear to travel to Queenstown in New Zealand.

The Windies team had been allowed to train in small groups while undergoing a mandatory 14-day isolation, but the Ministry of Health revoked that privilege on Wednesday after they discovered players had shared food and socialized together.

It was confirmed on Thursday that all members of the squad had cleared their third batch of COVID-19 tests which were conducted on day 12 of their stay and they are schedule to leave isolation on Friday.

The team will have two warm-up games against New Zealand 'A' ahead of the start of the Twenty20 international series on November 27.

West Indies head coach Phil Simmons has been quoted by the Newshub as saying his team would be scrambling to get up to speed, having had their training privileges removed. Simmons also called the incident embarrassing.

And the West Indies and New Zealand players who had been at the Indian Premier League (IPL) arrived in Auckland on Thursday.

According to reports all members of the traveling party have passed their initial health checks.

The players will board a chartered flight to Christchurch ahead of beginning their 14-day period of managed isolation.

Jamaicans Sheldon Cottrell and Fabian Allen are among the group of players who took part in the Indian Premier League.

Other West Indians set to join the squad are, test captain Jason Holder, limited overs skipper Kieron Pollard, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran and Keemo Paul. The first of three T20 Internationals is set for November 27 and the two-test series starts on December 3.
