Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie is not pleased with the implementation of the streetlight programme by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS).
Mr. McKenzie said the situation is particularly upsetting with the government having settled its arrears to the utility company.
"This government has been upfront. The Minister of Finance, after lengthy discussions, we paid off, we liquidated the debt to the Jamaica Public Service Company. There is an understanding as to how they would proceed, Mr. Speaker, and I must report to this House that we are not comfortable," he declared during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
He is to meet with the company and the Ministry of Finance to discuss the weaknesses identified.
The JPS is to install 18,000 LED streetlights by December.
Another 19,000 should be in place before the end of the financial year.
