The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has confirmed that the recent addition of 50 new trucks to its fleet has allowed it to clear the pile-up of garbage across several regions.

The new units were dispatched ahead of the Christmas season

Dennis Chung, Chairman of the Authority, disclosed on Monday that its three of the four regional bodies - Western, North Eastern and Southern have reported major improvements in the collection of solid waste.

Mr Chung told Radio Jamaica News that there has also been a redeployment of trucks to the Corporate Area, which is the largest population centre.

He said the agency is ensuring there is regular collection to avoid a backlog, particularly at this time of the year.

The NSWMA has now mobilised teams to handle the expected increase in solid waste due to heightened commercial activities.

Municipal corporations across the island have relaxed vending requirements, designating some roadways  exclusive vending areas.

Mr Chung said as the peak of the Christmas season draws near, the NSWMA will be proactive in countering the expected overflow of waste.
