Conflicting explanations are emerging for last week's internet service interruptions, with the portfolio minister and at least one service provider offering differing perspectives.
Fayval Williams, the minister with portfolio responsibility for the sector, is awaiting a full report on the service interruption.
She told Radio Jamaica News that preliminary reports have pointed to increased demand from customers as the reason for the disruption, with a significant shift in consumption pattern “to people using the Internet from their homes.”
She said the companies are trying to cope “with the demand that’s on an already over worked system.”
The country’s two main Internet service providers are Flow a subsidiary of C&W Communications, and Digicel.
More than 200,000 customers island-wide were affected by the disruption which lasted more than two hours.
Susanna O'Sullivan, Senior Director of Technology Operations at Flow Jamaica, explained however that the issue was related to the company's network and not due to any overload from the increased number of persons using the internet because of the Covid-19 virus.
