Dental surgeons in the public sector are cautiously optimistic that the longstanding issue of their compensation will be resolved following a meeting yesterday.

Representatives of the dentists and the ministries of Finance and Health met with the hope of finding an amicable resolution to the impasse.

The dental surgeons staged several days of industrial action to press the government to implement the salary review.

President of the Jamaica Association of Public Dental Surgeons Dr. Vanessa Kiffin told Radio Jamaica News that the negotiating team was able to lay out all the concerns of the group in relation to the implementation of the compensation review.

She said, while the negotiating team from the Ministry of Finance Ministry & the Public Service understand the urgency of the matter, they have appealed for patience on the part of the dentists.

"The State Minister (Zavia Mayne) presided over the meeting and was adamant that they needed time to delve into the proposals and reassess," she said, adding that "our cournter proposals will determine what their position is, and that will be in collaboration with the Ministry of Health."

Nevertheless, she reported that her organization stressed that its members are "restive," given "the extraordinary length of time that we've been waiting to sign-off on our compensation."

It was on March 24 this year that the dental surgeons presented their proposal to the Ministry, she reiterated.

Dr Kiffin said regular duties will resume as the dental surgeons await the response, stressing that the dental surgeons remain "very conderned about our patients, as we've always been."
