Guyana's
Elections Commission, Gecom, believes the postponement of local government
polls this year will give it time to complete a clean, acceptable voters' list.
Local government elections have not been held in Guyana in 15 years.
President Bharrat Jagdeo has expressed disappointment at the further delay.
Gecom chairman, Steve Surujbally, has said the late release of operating funds contributed to the delay.
He also defended the Commission's work saying it was shameful that attempts were being made to attack and stigmatise Gecom.
